The Refrigerator Couch: One Chill Seat

Canadian designer Adrian Johnson has taken creativity to a whole new level with his Fridge Couch, a combination of retro refrigerators and rescued junkyard car seats. His mission was to “go where recycling hasn’t gone before,” and that’s certainly something he accomplished with this. Looking to create something special for his wedding reception, his inspiration came to him when the 34-year-old Johnson in a scrapyard  spotted a beautiful cherry red BMW seat, in almost new conditions.  He also found a green 1970’s fridge and the creation took shape. With a little convincing the seat fit almost perfectly into the green refrigerator. He created a beautiful couch for his wedding reception and was off on  a new business venture.

Johnson now collects old refrigerators and seats which he puts in storage for later use. After carefully selecting a car seat, he then begins a search for the perfect refrigerator to fit the look, creating beautiful handcrafted masterpieces. Johnson explains that refrigerators and car seats are heavy, non-reusable products and that too much energy goes into recycling and melting them down. With his concept they go from being discarded items to artwork.

He leaves us with one thought, “I want people to see the creative value in reusing, rather than buying new from the store, which contributes to our massive waste problem.” Give us a call at Allen & Sons if your refrigerator is giving you trouble. We would rather fix it for you than have you buy a new one or better yet handing it over to Adrian Johnson to make a couch out of it.

The King of Refrigerators

Wave goodbye to your last minute beer runs, now there’s no need to go to the store to get your beer, ever. You can get fresh, cold, draft beer straight from your refrigerator thanks to Northstar System. Northstar is best known as a top selling producer of cool retro refrigerators, but with a new draft system available, the “cool” factor is sure to rise. The refrigerator comes in three different models and nine different colors, enabling a sure fit into any ambiance. Keg sizes vary between a 1/4 and 1/6 and shelves and crispers can be moved around and readjusted for space. The keg can also be removed, although we doubt you’ll do that when you consider the price you pay for such a fantastic refrigerator. The system will cost you $800 plus the refrigerator itself.
At Allen & Sons we believe there’s a refrigerator to fit every personality and every home, this one might just be a perfect fit for you. If your beer isn’t pouring properly due to the beer refrigerator cutting you off, give us a call and we’ll be over to fix and get those frothy beers pouring again.

A Dishwashers We Look Forward To Using

Washing dishes isn’t something we do because it makes us happy, and it certainly isn’t something we look forward to. That’s why Electrolux has designed two new concepts for dishwashing that we’re excited to try out because they might just change the way we feel about dishwashing.
The first dishwasher is actually built into your sink. Electrolux calls it Pure Washer. It works as a rotating sink/dishwasher. Only one sink is exposed at a time, while the other sink rotates under the counter. While being under the counter, the dishes are washed using degassed water, which means no detergents is necessary. If that isn’t cool enough, Electrolux went the extra mile to include a cycle that washes fruits and vegetables too.
The second dishwasher is waterless, hence it’s name Rockpool Waterless Dishwasher. Instead of water and chemicals, it uses super critical carbon dioxide in a closed loop system – in other words, the carbon dioxide is pressurized into a liquid form and then reused in every cycle. But how does that clean dishes? The carbon dioxide contains excellent grease and oil fighting properties, which when combined with a minimal amount of environmentally friendly detergent, can get dishes in sparkling condition. When the wash is done, the carbon dioxide and dirt are separated so the carbon dioxide can be reused in the next wash.
Both of these ideas can save us a significant amount of money, wether it be because you don’t need detergent or because the dishwasher doesn’t use water. We also enjoy the fact that the dishwashers are environmentally focused and they make the task of washing dishes almost enjoyable. Allen & Sons would love to take a look at your dishwasher if something isn’t working properly. Give us a call and we’ll be right over to repair your broken appliances.

P-7 Oven with a side of Peacheesy Pie

We love this ad for the 1964 G.E. P-7 Oven, not only because we love appliances, but because the ad itself tells us so much about the oven’s history. General Electrics had been the official Bake-Off range for the Pillsbury Bake-Off, an annual competition run by the Pillsbury Company. The Bake-Off, which started in 1949, was a competition in which contestants raced to bake the best recipe using Pillsbury’s BEST flour as the only required ingredient. In 1964, G.E. featured their new P-7 Oven in the Pillsbury Bake-Off. A total of 100 ovens were used and General Electrics used the competition to advertise their newest addition to a line of exceptional ovens – a self-cleaning oven. This was a smart move on behalf of the marketing team at G.E. because every woman participating in the Bake-Off must have fallen in love with the possibility that they might never have to clean their oven again! The winner, Janis Risley took home at $50,000 prize for her winning recipe – Peacheesy Pie. You can find the recipe here. If you realize your oven isn’t cleaning itself after you’ve finished baking your Peacheesy Pie, give Allen & Sons a call and we’ll be over to fix your broken oven and get it in pie-baking condition.

Luxurious French Stove

While flipping through an issue of Williams-Sonoma, I came across a beautiful and unique looking stove. Intrigued by it’s design, I began researching to find out where I could buy one for
the original price. I found the stove was designed by La Cornue, a French company that focuses on producing top of the line, luxurious appliances for French kitchens. Looking through their website I found different appliances with unique and beautiful trims, patterns, and colors. La Cornue produces truly luxurious appliances that can add elegance and polish to any kitchen. Like any appliance though, La Cornue is definitely pricey and should anything happen to my new stove, I’ll be calling Allen & Sons for a quick repair. Whether your kitchen appliances are La Cornue or not, call Allen & Sons for a quick repair at a great price.

Energy Consuming Igloo

When you think of an igloo, what kind of things come to mind? Blocks of ice, snow, cold weather, eskimos maybe – but never refrigerators! German artist Ralf Schmerberg built an igloo made entirely of old discarded refrigerators in the middle of Hamburg, Germany. He used a total of 322 refrigerators which he connected to a tower of electronics inside the igloo. But why would someone take the time and energy to build such a random and massive structure? According to Schmerberg, the project was in aims to raise awareness of the amount of energy wasted by people and to show that society’s desire for newer electronics is ruining the environment. He told AOL news, “We are playing with this fetish that we think we have a better life if we use better electronic devices…they make us lazy stupid, tired, and useless.”
Schmerberg included an electricity meter on the outside of his structure to show the public how much energy would be consumed by the refrigerators. The meter proved that with more efficient use, Germany could save around 40% more energy. Although new and old fridges may look the same on the outside, an efficient new refrigerator actually consumes half the electricity a ten-year-old fridge consumes. Schmerberg has definitely made his point and quite possibly caused people to stop and think about how they consume energy. If you want to join in the fight to conserve energy, it might be time to examine the way your refrigerator is working. Give us a call at Allen & Sons, we would be happy to check out your fridge.

Magnetic Stove

Just when you thought you were going to have to use those dirty public grills again or build a fire while you’re camping, Electrolux designer Mathieu Baele introduces a whole new idea to the way you cook your meals. The Stoov Cooker, a fresh concept that solves the problems faced when outdoors, or when lacking space in your kitchen. Baele’s desgin is based on smooth, stone-like discs that magnetically attach themselves to pots and pans, and then heat up to cook your food. When the Cooker is turned on and has power running through it, the magnets are activated, and when the power is turned off, the magnets are deactivated. The controls are all touch screen and there’s no need for battery’s, as you simply plug the Cooker into a wall charger. Once again, the appliance market is introduced to an idea that provides simplicity. Whether you own one of there Stoov Cooker’s or you own a regular stove, give us a call if your stove isn’t working properly, Allen and Son’s will make sure that we get the fire started again.

The Hans Solo Refrigerator

The one thing we all strive for is simplicity. We look high and low for a way to make things as simple as it can get. Apple Computer is a master at boiling things down to there simplest state. Here’s a fridge that makes storing your food as easy as it’s going to get. Designed by Russian born Yurly Dmitriev, the Bio Robot refrigerator is simply made of a cooling gel designed to hold anything and everything you want to store in your refrigerator. The non-sticky gel is a bipolimer gel that creates holding pods for items placed into the fridge. The holding pods then adjust to the temperature needed for that particular item. The gel can also expand or change shapes to accommodate any amount of food. The fridge can be hung vertically, horizontally, or even from the ceiling. Its the ultimate way of making food storage simple and easy. Allen & Sons will keep your refrigerator (futuristic or standard) running perfectly. We’re on board with simple and easy and we want to help you keep things that way.

Very Cool: Butterfly Dishwasher

Wave goodbye to the grueling task of restocking your shelves when dishes are clean. Lithuanian inventor Toma Brundzaite has created a wall mounted dishwasher that also suffices as shelves to store clean dishes. But a sleek design and space saving qualities isn’t what makes this dishwasher so cool. The Electrolux Bifoliate Double Dishwasher uses ultrasonic wave technology to ensure your dishes get cleaned. The few water sprayers that the dishwasher contains spray water onto dirty dishes while vibrating waves finish the job and later give you sparkling and ultra clean results. This quality makes it less time consuming and more efficient on water. Amazed? The Bifoliate Double Dishwasher design was carefully thought out providing two separate compartments to clean dishes. When one load is done, you are left with a compartment of clean dishes, and another compartment for a new load of dirty dishes. The door on the washer flips and slides to cover both compartment while keeping a futuristic modern design. Check it out for yourself @yankodesign

Refrigerators for the Planet

Want to see a refrigerator that gives the ability to ever person to own on. The

The need for the storage of vaccine led Adam Grosser to create this refrigerator that gives the ability for every person to own a fridge. Important because decease spreads when food is not appropriately kept. There are 1.6 billion people on this planet who don’t have access to electricity – meaning they don’t have access to refrigeration. This impacts the quality of life. So Adam took up the challenge and created a way for inexpensive refrigeration that doesn’t use electricity or propane, gas, kerosene or consumables. How does it work? Watch his short 3 min TED talk and find out:
